Chapman's Peak Drive · Updated 15 October 2026

Is Chapman's Peak Drive safe?

Yes — it's one of the safest drives in the country. The real risks are weather closures, other drivers stopping for photos, and driving it after dark.

The route

From Camps Bay, follow Victoria Road south through Bakoven and Llandudno toward Hout Bay, then pick up Chapman's Peak Drive with its toll plaza (card accepted). Camps Bay to Hout Bay via the drive is about 17 km and 30–45 minutes, longer if you stop at the viewpoints — which you should.

Why it's safe

The drive is tolled, gated and regularly patrolled, with formal viewpoints and lay-bys. Crime on the road itself is not the concern. Use the marked lay-bys only — tourists stopping in the lane for photos are the most common hazard.

Check before you go

The road closes in poor weather and for rockfall. Check chapmanspeakdrive.co.za for status and the current toll before you leave. Mid-morning, roughly 09:00–12:00, gives the best light; late afternoon is best for photos.

Don't drive it at night

The road is unlit, winding and cut into the cliff. There's nothing to see after dark and little margin for error. Plan to be through before sunset.

Parking in Hout Bay

Park at the harbour or Mariner's Wharf rather than on side streets, and leave nothing visible in the car. Opportunistic theft from parked cars is the main issue in town.

Make a day of it

Chapman's Peak is part of the classic Atlantic Seaboard loop.
